The generalist nursing training is here – what is changing now?
As of January 2020, you can no longer start training to become a nurse in this form. The reform of the nursing professions has made one out of three training courses: There is now a completely new, generalist nursing training course: that of a nursing specialist.

What does a nurse do?

Since the training to become a nurse is a bundled nursing training, nurses can later be deployed in different care professions, which is why the later activities can vary from job to job.

Occupation in elderly care: If nurses decide on a job in elderly care, they work in retirement homes or residential complexes for assisted living, where they accompany seniors in coping with their everyday lives. They support them with personal hygiene and food intake as well as the intake of medication, motivate them to meaningful and supportive activities and help them with personal matters such as appointments with doctors or offices.

Activity in (child) nursing: In the field of nursing or child nursing, nurses work in inpatient or outpatient care in clinics or hospitals. There they are responsible for the care and nursing of patients and carry out simple medical treatments – for example, they change bandages or administer infusions on doctor’s orders. They also prepare surgical interventions, assist with treatments and are responsible for managing patient files.

Activity in curative education care: As a nursing specialist in curative education care, everything revolves around people with a disability in your everyday work. In addition to caring activities, the main aim is to support people with a handicap so that they can maintain their independence. To this end, nurses plan excursions and leisure activities. Remedial carers find employment in social institutions, in nursing homes or with outpatient services.

Documentation of the measures and administrative activities: This activity is carried out by nurses in every job description, because it is important to monitor and document the backward and progress of the patient. To do this, they carefully maintain the patient files. Administrative activities include billing for care services or reordering materials or drugs.
